Winnipeg Police to Announce Arrest in Hate-Related Graffiti Case
Winnipeg police are set to hold a news conference today to announce an arrest related to a hate-related graffiti incident.
Insp. Jennifer McKinnon will provide more details at 1:30 p.m., according to a police news release from Friday.
In the past week, there were four reports of potential hate-related vandalism and property damage in Winnipeg. On Monday, McKinnon stated that investigators from the major crimes division were looking into incidents reported two days apart.
Last Friday morning, police reported that someone painted antisemitic graffiti, including swastikas, at Shaarey Zedek synagogue on Wellington Crescent.
On Sunday morning, a vandal was captured on surveillance cameras breaking windows at Habibiz Café on Portage Avenue. The owner of the Middle Eastern restaurant told CBC News that a threatening letter was left at the scene, telling them to leave the country and accusing them of being terrorists.
Swastikas were also found on Kelvin High School on Monday night.
Additionally, Abu Bakr Al-Siddique, an Islamic centre and mosque in the West End, was spray-painted with a swastika on Wednesday morning.
Police have not confirmed if the recent arrest is connected to any of these specific incidents.
