Frédérik Robert Builds Benches in Whitehorse

Overlooking downtown Whitehorse, a bench along the clay cliffs offers a stunning view. The city is surrounded by mountains, and ravens soar high in the air.

“This is the most dramatic spot for a bench,” said Frédérik Robert, who built it by hand.

For nearly a decade, Robert has created similar benches. He estimates there are more than 40 benches across the city, from Canyon City to Hillcrest. Some are hidden along woodland trails. Robert prefers the more scenic locations.

Community Impact of the Benches

Robert initially hesitated to give an interview but later agreed. He believes he is giving back to the community in his own way. His goal is to provide a nice place to sit, surrounded by nature.

“Each time you see a bench, sit down,” he said. “I do that, and it forces me to calm down and relax and notice the birds. Life is hectic.”

One person took a seat on a nearby bench to enjoy barbecued ribs during lunchtime.

Katherine Secord, a Whitehorse resident, said Robert’s benches help bring people together and add charm to the city. “I think it’s fantastic, actually,” she said. “He’s picked places where you get lovely views.”

Secord added, “He has, you know, inadvertently or on purpose, put these benches so that people can enjoy the environment and take a break. I’ve even visited with people. You know, meet at the bench.”

Inspiration Behind the Benches

Robert explained that this project came about by chance. “I wasn’t planning on doing this,” he said. “Requests of one or two or three. It just snowballed from there.”

“Plus, it’s fun,” he added.

Robert encourages everyone to give back, no matter how small the effort. “It doesn’t have to be a great big thing,” he said. “It doesn’t have to be worth millions of dollars. You could shovel your street.”

He gestured toward the bench and said, “or, you could make this.”
