Pelican Narrows faces a critical water system failure, forcing schools and public facilities to close while emergency measures are implemented to prevent damage.
Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation Faces Water Intake System Failure
The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) is experiencing a critical failure in the raw water intake system for Pelican Narrows.
PBCN stated in a news release that this issue is reducing the amount of water entering the treatment system. This creates an urgent need to conserve water. If the lines run low or dry, the system could shut down and freeze, causing significant damage.
“The next 48 to 72 hours are critical,” said PBCN Vice Chief Justin Halcrow.
“If we lose circulation in the system, the consequences could be catastrophic for homes and community infrastructure during winter conditions.”
Schools and other public facilities that use a lot of water have been closed for the rest of the week in Pelican Narrows. Essential services are still operating but under strict conservation measures.
Bottled water is being distributed by PBCN and volunteers, prioritizing elders and medically vulnerable individuals.
The exact cause of the problem has not been confirmed. Workers believe the restriction is upstream of the treatment plant, not at the pumps.
Emergency water tankers have been connected to the system to help maintain circulation and prevent freeze-up. Workers are also preparing short-term measures, including under-ice work and potential use of submersible pumps.
“We are doing everything possible to keep the system running while we work to identify the root cause of the problem,” said Coun. Olivia Custer. “Community cooperation is absolutely essential. Reducing water use right now helps protect the entire system.”
Custer mentioned that there is no confirmed timeline for a full resolution.
Leaders are asking the community to limit water consumption as much as possible. This includes fewer showers and laundry loads, and avoiding non-essential water use. They are also asking people to avoid winter line bleeding where safely possible.
