Traffic Delays Expected on Dewdney Trunk Road in Coquitlam

If you are traveling through Coquitlam on Dewdney Trunk Road between Mariner Way and Lougheed Highway, you may experience longer wait times.

For the next three months, Metro Vancouver is constructing a new section of water main from Dewdney Trunk Road to Mariner Way. This project replaces a water main built in 1950 that has reached the end of its service life.

“This drinking water infrastructure project will contribute to the long-term prosperity, sustainability and livability of the Metro Vancouver region,” said Joel Melanson, Metro Vancouver’s director of water services engineering design and construction, in an email to Daily Hive Urbanized.

It is “designed to meet the growing demand for drinking water in the region,” he added.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction for the next three months. Metro Vancouver advises motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to expect longer wait times.

“Please plan an alternate route if possible,” they stated in a traffic advisory.

Another construction project has caused road closures in Burnaby, expected to last until early this year. The Central Park Water Main–Imperial Section project is replacing a water main from the 1930s. This has resulted in a full road closure on sections of Imperial Street and Empress Avenue.

Metro Vancouver is also building the 12-kilometre-long Coquitlam Water Main, divided into four sections. This year, it plans to work on the Cape Horn Section from Westwood Street and Dewdney Trunk Road to Hickey Drive and Mariner Way.

Construction is expected to start in the fall, according to an email from Metro Vancouver.
