Graffiti was found on Montreal’s old Molson Brewery, prompting Groupe Montoni to report vandalism to police and plan cleanup efforts.
Graffiti Discovered on Old Molson Brewery
Graffiti tags were found on the exterior wall of the old Molson Brewery on Saturday. The tags were located just under the building’s iconic clock face.
Details of the Graffiti
The letters K, N, G, and L, U, K were added to the historic building. The first “O” in “Molson” was altered to look like it is dripping with white paint.
Investigation and Response
The individuals responsible for the graffiti and its meaning have not been identified. Groupe Montoni, which co-owns the building, reported the incident to the Montreal police.
Jean‑Baptiste Portrait, a spokesperson for Groupe Montoni, stated, “The incident appears to have occurred during the night from Friday to Saturday. At this stage, there is no indication of theft — only this isolated act.”
Portrait also mentioned that the site remains secured according to high standards. He added, “This type of incident, whether artistic or not, is regrettable, especially when it affects a heritage landmark.”
Police and Cleanup Efforts
As of Sunday afternoon, police had not confirmed if they received the complaint. A specialized “anti-graffiti firm” will assess how to remove the graffiti while preserving the heritage character of the site.
Future Plans for the Site
The site of Montreal’s old Molson Brewery is set to be transformed into a mixed-use residential neighborhood. It will include a park and a pedestrian-only area. Twenty percent of the project is expected to be dedicated to social housing.
