Toronto Begins Pothole Repair Blitz
The City of Toronto started its first pothole repair blitz of the year on Friday. Crews worked overnight to fill potholes across the city and continued into Saturday.
Mayor’s Involvement
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow joined crews as they filled a pothole at 3000 Don Mills Rd. in North York on Saturday.
“The winter is tough, the weather goes up and it goes down and the temperature fluctuates and it causes havoc in the roads,” Chow said at a news conference. “Potholes really hurt our cars, damage the alignments, the wheels and if they are on the sidewalks, it’s hard on pedestrians.”
Repair Schedule
The pothole repair blitz began Friday night from 10:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. A second and larger phase continued from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, according to city spokesperson Christy Abraham.
Pothole Statistics
Abraham noted that the city saw about 700 to 800 potholes per day in the last three months of 2025. However, Toronto has not seen an increase in potholes compared to last year at this time.
“City crews proactively identify, document and repair pothole and road damage during routine patrols and repair operations,” Abraham said. “The City’s pothole repair program aims to ensure road safety and smooth travel for residents and visitors.”
How Potholes Form
According to Abraham, potholes form when water penetrates the top layer of asphalt through cracks in roads. When the moisture freezes and expands, sections of pavement are forced up. The weight of vehicles can then break it.
Annual Repairs
Chow stated that around 200,000 potholes are fixed every year in the city.
Residents are encouraged to report potholes to 311, Abraham added.
