Safeway Store to Close for Redevelopment in Vancouver
A Safeway grocery store will permanently close to prepare for redevelopment. The store, located at 2315 West 4th Ave. in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood, will shut down at 9 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026.
This store has been a key business in the area for decades. The current building was first built in 1968. Safeway plans to return to the property after the new development is complete.
The City of Vancouver’s Development Permit Board approved the redevelopment permit in Spring 2025. The new project will be a horseshoe-shaped, mid-rise complex with heights reaching up to nine storeys.
Details of the Redevelopment

The site currently has surface vehicle parking and a 27,000 sq. ft. store. The new store will be over 50% larger than the existing one.
While the Safeway is closed for construction, other grocery options are nearby. Whole Foods Market is to the east, and Fresh St. Market opened a 20,000 sq. ft. store about four blocks west of the Safeway site in December 2025.
Additionally, a 22,000 sq. ft. Loblaws City Market will open later in 2026 at the northeast corner of Granville Street and West Broadway. The former Toys ‘R’ Us on West Broadway will become a new Sobeys grocery store.
Future redevelopment projects may also occur at other Safeway locations in the area, including West Broadway in Kitsilano and Kingsway in Collingwood.
