A house fire in Glenwood, P.E.I. resulted in the loss of several pets, but no humans were injured as the family was not home.
A few animals died in a fire that destroyed a family’s home in Glenwood, P.E.I. Volunteer firefighters from the O’Leary and West Point fire departments responded to the blaze after 6 p.m. on Saturday, as reported by O’Leary Chief Ron Phillips.
Chief Phillips stated that there were no injuries to people, but several house pets did not survive the fire. The home belonged to one of the volunteer firefighters from O’Leary.
“It tends to be upsetting; it’s certainly not something we’ve run into before,” Phillips told CBC on Sunday. The family of four, which includes a seven-year-old and a four-month-old, was not home when the fire started.
When the homeowner arrived, he attempted to assist the firefighters in extinguishing the flames. “He tried to help us out, and we had to ask him to just step back and let us do our thing because, you know, he’s understandably upset,” Phillips said.
Typically, firefighters leave after battling a fire, but this situation was different. “Several of the firefighters went to work and started making contacts about getting them clothing and supplies,” Phillips explained. Firefighters provided support on Saturday night and continued to assist on Sunday.
“I find anywhere on P.E.I., a small town will step up and support their own when they’re having troubles, and this is no exception,” Phillips added.
Regarding the cause of the fire, Phillips mentioned, “there wasn’t enough really left of the trailer to say how it initially got started.”
