New Accessible Level Crossing Opens in Montreal

A new universally accessible level crossing has opened, improving pedestrian and cyclist access between Outremont, Parc-Extension, and the nearby MIL Montréal university campus. This crossing opened on January 7, 2026.

Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada stated, “This project reflects our desire to make life easier for Montrealers.” She added that the crossing aligns with the city’s vision of “accessible, integrated and safe mobility.”

The crossing connects the Nouvel-Outremont sector with Parc-Extension. This area has changed rapidly in recent years and is now frequented by students, workers, and residents traveling to and from the MIL campus. Outremont Mayor Caroline Braun called the opening “a long-awaited moment.” She noted that residents had been requesting the project since at least 2016.

Jean-François Lalonde, mayor of Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension, said the new connection helps “open up a sector.” He mentioned that this responds to a community request that dates back more than a decade. The crossing makes travel safer and more fluid between the two boroughs.

The MIL Montréal project results from close collaboration with the Université de Montréal. It aims to create a dynamic, green urban environment where student life, research, and the arts coexist. Covering 118 hectares, the project redevelops the former Canadian Pacific railway yard north of Outremont and spans parts of several neighboring boroughs. The mixed-use district includes university and research facilities, housing, and an extensive network of public spaces. This is guided by a long-term land-use plan adopted by the city and refined through public consultations.
