A man from Nova Scotia has been sentenced to 4½ years in prison for a crash that killed three people, including an infant. Tyler Strong was driving a rental Volkswagen Golf on Highway 2 near Amherst on October 21, 2023, when he collided with another vehicle while speeding.

On that rainy night, Strong was driving over twice the legal speed limit of 70 km/h. He reached speeds of 168 km/h before hitting a Mitsubishi crossover that was making a left turn. Three of the four people in the Mitsubishi died, and one person was severely injured. Strong’s girlfriend, who was a passenger in his car, also suffered serious injuries.

Strong pleaded guilty to three counts of dangerous driving causing death and two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. In addition to his prison sentence, he received a five-year driving ban and cannot own firearms for ten years after serving his time.

Nova Scotia Supreme Court Justice Joshua Arnold accepted a joint sentencing recommendation from the Crown and defense. Arnold noted Strong’s difficult upbringing and his efforts to improve his life. However, he acknowledged the severe impact of Strong’s actions on the victims’ families.

Victim impact statements highlighted the emotional toll on those affected by the crash. One survivor expressed deep grief over the loss of her mother, infant son, and partner. Another family member described how their life has been shattered and how they struggle daily with the pain of loss.
