Ferry damaged by ice in Charlottetown leaks coolant, now docked in Georgetown before sailing to St. John’s for winter maintenance
MV Confederation Leaves Charlottetown After Damage
The MV Confederation has departed from Charlottetown following damage from ice and a coolant leak into the harbor last week. However, it has not traveled far.
The passenger ferry is currently docked in Georgetown, P.E.I., for a scheduled stop, according to officials.
Officials are waiting for better weather before the ferry continues to St. John’s, N.L., where it will undergo winter maintenance.
Last Monday, the MV Confederation attempted to sail out of Charlottetown Harbour towards Newfoundland and Labrador. The ferry had to turn back just outside the harbor entrance after ice caused damage.
This damage resulted in approximately 2,000 liters of coolant leaking into Charlottetown Harbour.
The coolant, a mixture of glycol and water, is described as a “non-recoverable product that dissipates quickly,” according to the Canadian Coast Guard, which is managing the response to the incident.
The MV Confederation is operated by Northumberland Ferries Limited and owned by Transport Canada. It typically services the route between Wood Islands, P.E.I., and Caribou, N.S., during the summer and fall months.
