A 48-year-old man is facing several weapons charges after an incident in Winnipeg. Police say he tried to assault a taxi cab driver in the William Whyte neighbourhood early Sunday morning.

At around 1:40 a.m., the taxi driver activated the emergency strobe light to alert nearby North End patrol officers in a marked cruiser. This occurred near Burrows Avenue and Powers Street.

Officers observed the taxi pull over in the 200 block of Powers Street, but the suspect walked away. The taxi driver reported that the man had attempted to assault him, but he was not injured.

When police detained the suspect, he was found carrying a loaded Springfield Hellcat 9×19 handgun with a prohibited 13-round magazine. He now faces multiple charges, including possession of a restricted weapon, and is in custody.
