Kitchener’s Heritage Committee advances plans to designate the Duke Street spiral parkade as a historic site, protecting it from demolition or major changes
Kitchener’s Heritage Committee Proposes Designation for Spiral Parkade
The iconic spiral parkade on Duke Street in downtown Kitchener may be designated as a significant historical building. Kitchener’s Heritage Committee has advanced plans to give the parking garage a heritage designation. This designation would protect it from demolition or repurposing for years.
The spiral concrete structure with its lime green exterior attracts many drivers in downtown Kitchener. However, some committee members were unsure about calling the building a part of Kitchener’s heritage.
Committee member Grant Eveleigh stated, “The spiral is interesting, though I don’t know if I would want to see it encumber or inhibit any redevelopment at this site.” Despite this, the majority of the committee supported protecting the parkade.
Committee member Peter Ciuciura remarked, “It is heroic in its proportions, it is optimistic in its design, and I think it fully merits having the protection of a heritage designation.”
The committee has moved forward with plans to designate the parkade as heritage, along with six other properties, including the former Pine Grove schoolhouse near Sportsworld Drive.
