Roadways in Kingston, Ontario, are deteriorating due to a harsh winter, causing drivers to navigate around craters earlier than usual.
As temperatures fluctuate above and below freezing, the freeze-thaw cycle is damaging asphalt and creating unsafe driving conditions. Motorists are increasingly frustrated.
Both minor and major road damage can lead to serious issues. Local mechanics report an increase in alignment problems and bent rims.
James Young from JJ Automotive notes that road conditions are worse this year compared to past winters.
“I think this year is actually a little bit worse and damages seem more severe,” Young stated.
He warns that hitting a deep pothole can result in costly repairs.
“When it gets into the suspension and things like that, sometimes it can be quite expensive,” Young added.
The City of Kingston reports that crews are working to repair the roads, but they face challenges from the weather. Repairs often occur in brief periods between winter storms.
“We are trying to use all the good weather we can to fill potholes as fast as possible,” said Adam McDonald, public works manager.
However, McDonald acknowledges that most repairs are temporary.
“For the vast majority of potholes, it is a temporary repair until conditions improve in the spring,” he said.
With several weeks of winter remaining, officials advise drivers to slow down and remain alert, as pothole season is not over.
