Residents in Chilliwack, B.C., are urging action on an abandoned homeless camp filled with waste and chemicals near the Chilliwack River Fish Hatchery
Activists Call for Cleanup of Abandoned Homeless Camp in Chilliwack
Local activists in Chilliwack, B.C., are raising concerns about an abandoned homeless camp in the Chilliwack River Valley. The area is filled with derelict vehicles, trash, and chemicals.
They want the provincial government to help clean it up. This is especially important because the camp is near the Chilliwack River Fish Hatchery and another fish-bearing creek.
Residents, including Derrick Kramer and Ross Aikenhead, have reported the mess to the District of Chilliwack and the B.C. government. They say there seems to be no urgency to clean it up.
Details of the Camp
Kramer noted that the camp was abandoned about a year ago. Residents included people who are unhoused and illegal campers.
“It should be dealt with before it gets to this,” Kramer said, pointing to the mess.
He described the presence of many chemicals, including paint cans, aerosol cans, and tarps. “It’s just atrocious,” he added.
Community Efforts and Concerns
Kramer stated he does not oppose camping in the bush, but a mess like this should not be left behind. “There’s probably 15 different camps at this moment,” he said.
He mentioned that there is constant cleaning and volunteer efforts to manage the situation. He expressed frustration, emphasizing that the main concern is the environment.
“Whether you’re down on your luck or up on your luck, this is not acceptable,” Kramer added.
Government Response
B.C.’s Ministry of Housing informed Global News that they are aware of the situation and are working on solutions to move people indoors.
