Cape Breton University begins site work for a 145-unit housing project in Sydney, N.S., at the former Tartan Downs racetrack, with plans for affordable housing
New Housing Project Begins at Former Tartan Downs Racetrack
Groundbreaking has started at a former horse racing track as Cape Breton University (CBU) plans a new housing project in Sydney, N.S. Heavy equipment began moving dirt on Monday in the infield area of the former Tartan Downs, a historic racetrack that opened in 1889 and closed in 2006.
According to a news release from CBU, the university is installing sewer, water, and storm-water infrastructure. They are also preparing a preliminary street alignment for the first phase, which will include a 145-unit housing project in a residential neighborhood.
The Urban Neighborhood Development Association, a development company created by CBU, has commissioned the work. The university plans to build a mix of townhouses and apartments, with up to half of the units designated as affordable housing.
This project is expected to provide student housing but will also be open to the public. CBU has received $5 million from the province and an additional $5.4 million in federal funding through the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.
CBU has not yet provided a timeline for construction but expects to announce details on final approvals and financing in the new year. “Undertaking this early earthwork ensures that the project maintains momentum and is well positioned for an efficient construction start once all elements of phase one are approved,” said MacIntyre in the release.
