Corbin Constant and Tasha Ferland drove onto Cedar Lake early on December 16. Their pickup truck fell through the ice about 75 meters from shore, west of Manitoba Hydro’s Grand Rapids Generating Station.

RCMP stated that the two could not escape the vehicle before it sank into the lake, which is north of Lake Winnipegosis. The search began with the RCMP, Grand Rapids Fire Department, and Manitoba Hydro. They found the truck on December 18, but neither Constant nor Ferland was inside.

Search Efforts

On Saturday, RCMP confirmed that Constant’s body was recovered by local searchers on Thursday. The search for Ferland continues, weather permitting.

Misipawistik Cree Nation Chief Heidi Cook expressed that the recovery of Constant’s body is significant for the family. She stated, “But they’re relieved and grateful.”

Volunteers joined the Grand Rapids Fire Department and RCMP in the search. The Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team (HEART) also participated but had to stop due to damage to their airboat.

Members of the Prince Albert Grand Council helped find Constant’s body on Thursday, close to where the truck broke through the ice. Search conditions improved when Manitoba Hydro brought more generating units back online, increasing water flow and melting more ice.

Future Search Plans

With warmer weather expected, search crews can cover a wider area. Maendel stated, “I can’t imagine the suffering that’s going on with the families of these victims.”

Search crews found a phone believed to belong to Ferland. Her sister told CBC News that the family can only “hope and pray the divers find her, like they did with Corbin.”

Chief Cook believes that crews will find Ferland based on the information gathered during Constant’s search. However, a delay could complicate recovery due to potential changes in lake conditions.

Cook urged people to keep Misipawistik Cree Nation in their thoughts, emphasizing the safety of the search crews. She stated, “We just have to pray that she’s found.”
