Fire in Inuvik Injures Two Workers
One person was critically injured and another suffered minor injuries in a fire at a business in Inuvik, N.W.T., on Wednesday.
The Inuvik Fire Department stated it responded to a structure fire at an industrial business on Airport Road just after 4 p.m.
Firefighters controlled the fire within half an hour and spent a few more hours extinguishing hotspots. The temperature in the community was below –40 C at the time.
The fire department reported that the two injured individuals were staff members of the business.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the fire department noted that “no criminality is suspected.”
Inuvik Mayor Peter Clarkson said the workers from Northwind Industries were treated at Inuvik’s hospital.
Clarkson told CBC News that firefighters responded quickly and extinguished the fire before it spread to a main building.
“When the fire department got on the site, staff from Northwind had already gone to the hospital to be checked out,” Clarkson said.
“The firefighting and everything that took place after that certainly went well.”
